Why we choose steel for our Thorn Touring Bikes

Why we choose steel for our Thorn Touring Bikes

At Thorn, we’re passionate about bikes that can go the distance – and we’re equally passionate about the materials we choose to build them. One question we’re often asked is:

“Why do you use steel for your touring bike frames?”

It’s a fair question, especially when there are so many other materials out there vying for attention. But for us, the answer is simple – steel offers a combination of qualities that make it perfect for the kind of bikes we love to make (and love to ride!).

So, here are just a few of the reasons we continue to put our trust in steel...

1. Comfort and vibration damping

Steel frames, particularly those made with high-quality tubing,  are renowned for their ability to absorb road vibrations. This makes for a smoother, more comfortable ride, especially when you’re tackling rough or uneven surfaces. Thanks to the natural flex of steel, the harshness of the road is softened, reducing fatigue and helping you go the distance.

2. Durability and strength

Steel is incredibly tough and durable. Unlike some materials that can fatigue over time, steel resists cracks and fractures, making it far less likely to fail unexpectedly. It’s a material you can truly rely on, which is why it’s ideal for riders who want a bike that will go the distance, year after year.

3. Easy to repair

One of the real joys of steel is how straightforward it is to repair. If your steel frame suffers damage, it can usually be welded or fixed far more easily than aluminium or carbon fibre. That makes steel a brilliant option for those who value a bike they can look after and keep on the road for decades to come

4. Classic style

There’s something undeniably charming about a steel bike. Steel frames have a traditional, timeless look that many cyclists adore – ourselves included! There’s a real beauty in the craftsmanship of a well-made steel bike, and they never seem to go out of style.

5. Lighter than you might think

Steel might have a reputation for being heavy, but modern steel tubing is a different story. Thanks to advancements like butted tubing – where the tubes are thicker at the ends and thinner in the middle – today’s steel bikes are much lighter than you might expect, all without compromising on strength or comfort.

6. Unique ride quality

Many riders say steel offers a ride quality that’s hard to beat – often described as “lively” or “springy”. It gives a lovely sense of connection to the road, making the ride feel more responsive and engaging compared to some stiffer materials like carbon fibre.

7. Versatility

Steel is wonderfully versatile. Whether you’re after a road bike, a touring bike, or even a gravel bike, steel frames can be built to handle it all. They also often come with mounting points for racks and mudguards, making them ideal for long-distance adventures, bikepacking, or everyday commuting.

8. Customisability

Many steel frames are crafted by smaller builders or bespoke manufacturers, which means you can often have them built to your exact specifications. That might sound technical, but it’s all about getting the perfect fit and the right ride feel for your body and style of riding. And if you’re dreaming of a one-of-a-kind touring bike built just for you, we’d be delighted to help.

9. Sustainability

Finally, steel is a recyclable material, which makes it a more environmentally friendly option in the long run – especially when you consider how long a well-made steel frame can last.

A few final thoughts...

For us, it’s not just about building bikes that look great – it’s about building bikes that will be your trusted companion for years to come. Steel has a certain soul and character that’s hard to put into words, but if you’ve ever ridden a good steel bike, you’ll know exactly what we mean.

So, if you’re after a bike that will carry you on countless adventures, stand the test of time, and feel like an old friend every time you climb aboard, steel might just be the perfect match.
